Breast Reconstruction
What is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction, also known as breast repair, is a surgical procedure to rebuild the breast(s) lost due to surgery, typically after breast cancer treatment or as a result of trauma. This surgery significantly enhances the patient’s physical appearance and psychological well-being following breast loss.
How is Breast Reconstruction Performed?
Breast reconstruction can be achieved using various surgical techniques, primarily divided into two methods:
- Reconstruction with Implants: This method involves using breast implants to replace the lost breast tissue and create a new breast.
- Flap Reconstruction: This technique uses tissue, fat, and sometimes muscles from the patient’s own body to reconstruct a new breast.
Who is a Candidate for Breast Reconstruction?
- Individuals who have undergone a mastectomy after breast cancer treatment
- Those who have experienced breast loss due to trauma
- Individuals with congenital breast development disorders
- Those with breast deficiencies caused by genetic factors
At What Age is Breast Reconstruction Performed?
Breast reconstruction is typically performed after breast development is complete, usually starting at the age of 18. However, the appropriate age may vary based on individual conditions and needs.
Types of Prostheses Used in Breast Reconstruction
Prostheses for breast reconstruction are categorized by their contents:
- Saline Implants: Filled with sterile salt water, providing a firm feel.
- Silicone Implants: Filled with silicone gel, offering a more natural breast tissue feel.
Prostheses are also categorized by their shapes:
- Round Breast Implants: Hemispherical in shape, creating a well-rounded breast appearance.
- Anatomical (Drop Shape) Implants: Shaped like a raindrop, with a thinner upper part and a wider lower part, giving a fuller appearance at the bottom of the breast.
Duration of Breast Reconstruction Surgery
Breast reconstruction surgery typically takes about 1-3 hours. After the surgery, the patient stays under observation in the hospital for one day and is then discharged. Most patients can return to work within 4-7 days.
